Magnetic Locks vs Strap Locks: Cabinet Childproofing Head-to-Head

Every parent has a moment that resets their childproofing priorities. Mine came when my younger daughter, not yet 18 months old, emptied the cabinet under the kitchen sink in the time it took me to answer the front door. Dish soap, a bottle of drain cleaner, a sponge. She had them all on the floor before I made it back down the hallway. We had a strap lock on that cabinet. The adhesive had been losing its grip for weeks, and I had kept meaning to replace it.

That afternoon I ordered magnetic locks. But I also kept strap locks on three other cabinets. The answer to which type is better is not as clean as the marketing makes it sound.

What You’re Comparing

Magnetic locks mount inside the cabinet door or drawer. A spring-loaded latch holds the door shut until you press a magnetic key against the exterior surface, releasing the mechanism from outside. No visible hardware. No fumbling with a latch. Just a subtle click and the door opens.

Strap locks work differently. An adhesive base mounts on the cabinet frame and on the door or drawer face. A flexible strap connects them. You loop the strap through a locking tab to secure the cabinet, and you manually unfasten it every time you need access. Everything is visible. Everything is tactile.

Both types, when properly installed and consistently used, meet the CPSC’s standard for preventing children from accessing hazardous items like cleaning supplies, medications, and sharp objects. The question is which type fits your household’s specific cabinets, routines, and caregivers.

The Case for Magnetic Locks

Speed is the obvious argument. If you open your snack cabinet 15 times a day, unfastening a strap lock every single time becomes a real friction point. With a magnetic lock, you hold the key near the latch, hear the click, and pull. It takes about one second. Over a full day of cooking and cleaning, that adds up.

The other argument is durability. Magnetic locks have no adhesive to weaken, no strap to fatigue. The mechanism is mechanical. It either works or it doesn’t, and when it’s installed correctly it tends to keep working for years without replacement.

Cabinet locks must meet ASTM F3492–21, the voluntary consumer safety standard in the U.S., which requires locks to withstand an average breaking force of at least 45.3 lbs across a 30-sample test. A properly installed magnetic lock with a solid mounting surface will hold that load reliably. A strap lock whose adhesive is starting to peel will not.

Magnetic locks are also the better choice for cabinets that children will eventually grow strong enough to force. The latch mechanism doesn’t care how hard a four-year-old pulls. The resistance is consistent.

The Case for Strap Locks

My older daughter defeated an adhesive strap lock at 26 months. She figured out the tab release by watching me open it. That’s a real limitation of strap locks, and I’ll come back to it. But strap locks have real advantages that magnetic locks can’t match.

Versatility is the biggest one. Strap locks work on nearly any cabinet or drawer style without drilling, without mounting hardware inside the cabinet, and without any permanent modification to the furniture. If you rent, this matters enormously. If you have glass-front cabinets, shallow drawers, or furniture with unusual door depths that won’t accommodate a magnetic latch, a strap lock is often the only option.

They’re also cheaper upfront. Strap locks typically run $5–15 per lock. Magnetic locks usually cost $15–40 per lock, and you’ll also need to account for the magnetic key, which is a separate piece you have to manage and store. If you’re childproofing 12 cabinets in a small apartment, the cost difference is real.

The visibility factor matters more than it sounds. A strap lock is a constant visual reminder to everyone in the household, including grandparents visiting for a weekend, that this cabinet is locked. Magnetic locks are invisible from the outside. A caregiver who doesn’t know the system exists won’t know to use the key.

And strap locks are easier for some adults to operate. For parents with arthritis, limited grip strength, or reduced hand mobility, the simple pull-and-fasten motion of a strap lock can be more manageable than locating the magnetic key and positioning it precisely against the cabinet surface.

Where Each Type Falls Short

Magnetic locks have one failure mode that concerns me more than any other: the lost key. If the magnetic key ends up in a junk drawer, a diaper bag, or a child’s toy box, you may not realize the cabinet is no longer being locked consistently. The failure is silent. There’s no visual cue that anything is wrong.

The 2012 CPSC recall of 900,000 Safety 1st Push 'N Snap cabinet locks illustrates this risk. The recall followed 140 children defeating the locks, with three reaching toxic cleaning products. The mechanism failed. Parents had no obvious warning it was failing.

Strap locks have their own failure mode, and it’s the one I experienced firsthand: adhesive degradation. Heat, humidity, and repeated use all weaken the bond. A strap lock that was firmly mounted six months ago may be hanging by a thread today. You have to check them regularly. Plan on replacing them every 6–12 months in a high-use, high-humidity environment like a kitchen or bathroom.

The other strap lock limitation is that a child who watches you open the latch enough times will eventually figure it out. My older daughter did. That’s not a knock on strap locks specifically, but it’s worth knowing that the tab mechanism is learnable.

  1. Clean the surface

    Wipe both mounting points with rubbing alcohol and let dry before applying adhesive.
  2. Press and hold

    Apply firm, even pressure to each adhesive base for at least 60 seconds.
  3. Wait the full cure time

    Do not load the lock for 24–72 hours. Skipping this step is the most common cause of early failure.
  4. Test before trusting

    After curing, pull firmly on each base to confirm the bond holds before relying on it.
  5. Check monthly

    Press each base firmly every month. Any movement means it’s time to replace the lock.

The Poison Risk Context

In 2024, household cleaning substances topped the list of substances children under 6 got into, accounting for 10.1% of all pediatric poison center cases, according to America’s Poison Centers. More than 99% of those exposures were unintentional. That’s the number that should be on your mind when you’re deciding whether a slightly inconvenient strap lock is worth the hassle.

CPSC 90 children under 5 died from unintentional poisonings in 2023. Narcotic-medication fatalities specifically doubled from 33 in 2021 to 66 in 2023. The medications most parents keep in a bathroom cabinet, including acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and prescription narcotics, all sent significantly more children under 5 to the ER in 2022 than the year before.

A cabinet lock, any cabinet lock, is not optional for under-sink storage or medicine cabinets. The question of which type to use matters less than the question of whether you’re using one at all, and whether every adult in the house knows it’s there and uses it every time.

Matching Lock Type to Cabinet

This is where most buying guides go wrong. They try to pick a winner. The better approach is matching the lock type to the specific cabinet.

Use magnetic locks for:

  • High-traffic cabinets you open many times daily, like the pantry, the dish cabinet, or the refrigerator if your child has figured out the handle
  • Cabinets where you want invisible hardware for aesthetic reasons
  • Long-term installations in owned homes where you can mount hardware properly
  • Any cabinet where you want consistent resistance regardless of how strong your child gets

Use strap locks for:

  • Rental homes or temporary childproofing situations
  • Glass-front cabinets, shallow drawers, or furniture that won’t accommodate internal hardware
  • Cabinets accessed infrequently, like under-sink storage or a medicine cabinet, where the slower access time is a minor inconvenience
  • Households where multiple caregivers need an obvious visual cue that the cabinet is secured
  • Any situation where the parent’s dexterity makes a magnetic key difficult to operate reliably

Many households, including mine, use both. Magnetic locks on the kitchen cabinets I open constantly. Strap locks on the bathroom cabinet under the sink, which I open once a week to restock supplies.

Installation and Ongoing Maintenance

Magnetic locks require a flat, solid mounting surface inside the cabinet. Most come with a template and mounting screws. The installation takes about 10 minutes per lock if you’re comfortable with a drill. Check the door depth before you buy. Some cabinet doors are too thin or too shallow to accommodate the latch mechanism, and you won’t know until you’re holding the hardware.

Strap locks require clean, dry, flat surfaces for the adhesive to bond properly. Wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol before mounting. Apply firm pressure for at least 60 seconds. Then wait 24–72 hours before putting any load on the lock. Most adhesive failures I’ve seen happened because someone skipped the curing time.

Check strap lock adhesion monthly. Press firmly on each base and feel for any give. If there’s movement, replace it before your child finds the weakness first.

Consistency Is the Variable That Matters

ASTM F3492–21 sets a performance floor. America’s Poison Centers data establishes the stakes. But the AAP’s position on childproofing is worth keeping in mind: cabinet locks are one layer of protection, and they work only when every caregiver uses them every time. A magnetic lock with the key sitting on the counter next to it is not a locked cabinet. A strap lock that a visiting grandparent leaves unfastened after getting the dish soap is not a locked cabinet.

Whatever you choose, make sure every adult who spends time in your home knows the system, knows where the magnetic key lives (if applicable), and understands that the lock only works when it’s engaged. The hardware is the easy part.
