Kitchen Cabinet Safety: Locks Latches and Childproofing Solutions

Every year, America’s Poison Centers reported more than 87,000 cases of children under 6 exposed to household cleaning products in 2024, making it the single largest substance category for that age group. Most of those products live under the kitchen sink. And most of those cabinets have nothing on them but a magnetic door.

Cabinet locks are not glamorous. They’re fiddly to install, annoying to use, and easy to skip when you’re already exhausted from babyproofing the rest of the house. But the kitchen is where the real chemical inventory lives, and a curious toddler moves faster than you think.

I learned this the hard way. My younger daughter once emptied the entire under-sink cabinet in the time it took me to answer the front door. She was 18 months old. The cabinet held dish soap, a spray bottle of multi-surface cleaner, and a full container of dishwasher pods. None of it was locked. That was the last day it wasn’t.

Why the Kitchen Deserves Its Own Safety Plan

The kitchen concentrates hazards in a way no other room does. Cleaning chemicals, knives, heavy pots, small appliances, and medications all share the same low-to-the-floor real estate that a crawling or newly walking child can reach in seconds. In 2024, 99.2% of poison center cases involving children under 6 were accidental, according to America’s Poison Centers. These aren’t failures of parenting. They’re failures of access.

CPSC 90 U.S. children under 5 died from unintentional poisonings in 2023, and narcotic-medication fatalities specifically doubled from 33 in 2021 to 66 in 2023. Medications belong in a locked cabinet, full stop. But cleaning products are the volume problem. According to the AAP, about 3 million people are exposed to a poisonous substance every year, and many are children under 5. The kitchen is where a significant share of those exposures begin.

Cabinet locks are one layer of protection. They work alongside supervision, out-of-reach storage, and age-appropriate teaching. But they are the layer that holds when your back is turned.

The Three Main Lock Types

Cabinet locks fall into three practical categories, and understanding the differences before you buy saves you a frustrating afternoon of returns.

Magnetic locks are the most popular option for families who want a clean look. The mechanism mounts inside the cabinet, and a magnetic key held against the outside of the door releases the catch. They’re invisible from the front, which matters if you have nice cabinetry. The catch is compatibility. Magnetic locks may not work reliably on frameless European-style cabinets, or on doors with metal reinforcement that interferes with the magnet’s signal. If you’re not sure, test one cabinet before buying a 10-pack.

Sliding barrel latches are mechanical, visible on the cabinet face, and require no keys or batteries. You slide a barrel or tab to release the latch. They’re durable, simple, and hard for small hands to operate. The tradeoff is aesthetics. They’re not subtle, and on painted or stained cabinetry they stand out. For a utility kitchen or a rental where you don’t want to drill, they’re a solid choice.

Push-to-open locks use a spring-loaded mechanism that requires a specific press-and-release motion. No key, no sliding part. They’re faster for adults once you learn the motion, but they’re also the category with the most notable failure history. The CPSC recalled 900,000 Safety 1st Push 'N Snap cabinet locks in March 2012 after 140 children defeated them. Three of those children reached toxic cleaning products. That recall is a useful reminder that mechanism design matters, and that "push-to-open" is not inherently childproof.

ASTM F3492–21 is the voluntary consumer safety standard that applies to cabinet locks and latches in the U.S. Locks that meet it must withstand an average breaking force of at least 45.3 lbs across a 30-sample test. When you’re buying, look for that standard on the packaging.

Installation: Surface and Cabinet Type Matter

The most common installation mistake is treating all cabinets as identical. They’re not.

Solid wood cabinets accept screws cleanly and hold them well. Particle board and veneer require shorter screws at shallower depths, or you risk splitting the material. Metal-front and glass-front cabinets usually need adhesive-only solutions, since drilling is either impossible or risks cracking the surface. If you’re unsure what your cabinet interiors are made of, tap them. Solid wood sounds dense. Particle board sounds hollow.

Always test on a non-critical cabinet first. In my experience, I installed six magnetic locks across my kitchen before I realized the cabinet next to the dishwasher had a thin metal bracket inside the door that was blocking the magnet’s range. The lock looked installed. It didn’t work. Testing before you commit to a full installation saves you from discovering the failure when a toddler discovers it first.

For adhesive locks, surface prep is everything. Clean the mounting area with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry completely, then apply the lock and leave it to cure for a full 24 hours before use. Adhesive bonds fail most often on laminate and high-gloss finishes that weren’t properly degreased. If your cabinets have a textured or heavily lacquered finish, a screw-mounted option will hold more reliably over time.

Temperature fluctuations in kitchens, steam from cooking, and the repeated vibration of slamming doors all stress adhesive bonds over time. Plan to test every lock monthly by attempting to open the cabinet with normal hand pressure. Replace any lock that feels loose or shows visible wear.

Drawers Are a Separate Problem

A cabinet lock does nothing for a drawer. This sounds obvious, but I’ve seen parents lock every cabinet under the counter and leave the knife drawer accessible. Drawers need dedicated hardware.

Sliding drawer locks are the most common solution. They mount inside the drawer and engage a catch on the cabinet frame when the drawer is closed. Installation is similar to interior cabinet locks, and the same surface considerations apply. If the drawer is particle board, use the shortest screw that still bites into the material.

Drawers containing sharp utensils, small appliances with cords, or any medications are the priority. A drawer full of silicone spatulas and measuring cups can stay unlocked. It gives your toddler something to safely explore, which reduces the frustration of a fully locked kitchen and keeps them occupied while you cook.

High-Security Cabinets: Medications and Cleaning Products

Standard spring or magnetic locks are adequate for most kitchen cabinets. For cabinets storing medications, vitamins, or concentrated cleaning products, consider a combination lock or a key-operated cabinet lock. The additional friction matters when the contents are dangerous.

If you use a key-operated lock, the key must be stored out of reach and out of sight. Toddlers are observant. My older daughter figured out where we kept the spare key to a lockbox at 28 months. She hadn’t seen us use it more than a few times. Children learn by watching, and a key on a hook at adult eye level is not a secure storage solution.

The under-sink cabinet is the highest-priority cabinet in most kitchens. Dishwasher pods are a particular concern because they’re colorful, squishy, and appealing to small children. Concentrated cleaning products and oven cleaners belong either locked or moved to a high shelf entirely. Locking the cabinet and relocating the most dangerous items to a higher location is a reasonable belt-and-suspenders approach.

Refrigerators and Appliances

Refrigerator locks are easy to overlook because the refrigerator doesn’t feel like a hazard cabinet. But a climbing child can open a refrigerator door, and a heavy door swinging open can knock a toddler down. There’s also the entrapment risk if a child climbs inside, which sounds unlikely until you’ve met a determined two-year-old.

Refrigerator strap locks loop around the door handle and anchor to the body of the appliance. They’re inexpensive, take about five minutes to install, and require no drilling. For families with climbers, they’re worth adding to the list. The same category of appliance strap works on dishwashers, which can be opened mid-cycle and present a burn hazard from steam and hot water.

Prioritizing What Gets Locked

You don’t need to lock every cabinet in the kitchen. Doing so creates friction that makes cooking harder and doesn’t meaningfully reduce risk in low-hazard areas.

Lock these first: under-sink cabinets, any cabinet storing medications or vitamins, drawers containing knives or sharp utensils, and any cabinet holding heavy items that could fall on a child who opens the door and reaches inside.

Leave these unlocked: cabinets holding plastic containers, pot lids, dish towels, or other soft and non-toxic items. These are good supervised-exploration zones. Giving a toddler one cabinet they’re allowed to open redirects some of the curiosity that would otherwise go straight to the locked ones.

Locks Work Best Alongside Habits

Cabinet locks buy you time. They are not a permanent solution to curiosity. As children grow, they get stronger, more coordinated, and more motivated. My older daughter defeated an adhesive strap lock at 26 months by pulling the door hard enough to shear the adhesive off the paint. The lock failed. The habit we’d been building, explaining that certain cabinets were off-limits and required asking first, had more staying power.

Start teaching cabinet rules early, even before you think your child understands. Use consistent language. "That cabinet is locked because it has things that can hurt you" is a sentence a two-year-old can begin to internalize. Gradually, as children get older, introduce supervised access to age-appropriate cabinets. The goal is a child who understands why certain spaces require permission, not a child who has simply been locked out long enough to forget about them.

Locks are infrastructure. Habits are the long game. Use both.
