Water Temperature Safety: How to Prevent Scalding in the Bathroom

Most parents think about drowning when they picture bathroom danger. The burn risk is quieter, easier to overlook, and almost entirely preventable.

Scalding from hot tap water is one of the leading causes of unintentional burn injuries in young children, and the bathroom is where most of those injuries happen. During a bath, a handwashing routine, or a moment when a curious toddler gets to the faucet before you do. The CDC identifies water temperature as a critical modifiable risk factor, meaning you can change it today, before anything happens.

The Numbers That Should Change How You Think About Your Water Heater

Here is what hot water does to skin. At 120°F (49°C), a serious scald takes about five minutes of exposure (CPSC). At 140°F (60°C), a third-degree burn can occur in just five seconds. Infant skin is thinner than adult skin, which means it burns faster and deeper at the same temperature. The gap between "this feels hot" and "this is causing permanent damage" is measured in seconds, not minutes, at the temperatures many home water heaters are set to by default.

Many water heaters ship from the factory set to 140°F (60°C) or higher. That is a setting designed for appliance efficiency and legionella suppression in commercial buildings, not for a household with a two-year-old. The AAP recommends setting the water heater to 120°F (49°C) or lower to prevent scalds. This is the single most effective change you can make, and it costs nothing.

Finding your water heater’s thermostat varies by unit. Gas heaters typically have a dial near the burner. Electric heaters often have two panels, one for each heating element, both of which need to be adjusted. If you are not sure, call your utility company. Many will walk you through it for free.

Anti-Scald Devices: What They Are and When You Need Them

Lowering the water heater temperature is the foundation. Anti-scald devices are the backup layer, and for some households they are essential.

There are two main types worth knowing. Thermostatic mixing valves blend hot and cold water to deliver a preset maximum temperature at the tap or showerhead, regardless of what the water heater is set to. Pressure-balancing valves compensate when pressure shifts, such as when a toilet flushes mid-shower, which can suddenly spike the hot-to-cold ratio. The CPSC recommends anti-scald devices especially for homes with children under five, because they provide a physical barrier even if the water heater setting drifts or is changed by someone else in the household.

Faucet-mounted anti-scald devices are inexpensive and install without a plumber. They protect only the outlet where they are installed. If you have one bathroom your toddler uses, this is a fast, affordable fix. Shower valve anti-scald devices are installed inside the wall and protect the entire shower circuit. More involved to install, but more comprehensive protection, particularly in homes with multiple bathrooms where you cannot always control which one a child wanders into.

If your home has a tankless water heater, anti-scald devices become more important, not less. Tankless systems can deliver very hot water with minimal delay and without the temperature buffering that a tank provides. A plumber can assess which anti-scald solution pairs correctly with your specific unit.

Renters and Multi-Unit Buildings

If you rent, you are not without options. Many jurisdictions require landlords to maintain water heater temperatures at safe levels. Contact your building management in writing, specifically requesting water heater temperature adjustment and anti-scald device installation. Keep a copy of that request. If something happens and you need to demonstrate you raised the concern, that documentation matters.

Your lease does not have to say anything about this for the request to be reasonable. Frame it as a health and safety issue. Most landlords respond. Those who do not are creating a paper trail for themselves.

  1. Set the water heater to 120°F (49°C)

    Locate the thermostat on your gas or electric unit and lower it. Call your utility company if you need guidance.
  2. Install an anti-scald device

    Add a faucet-mounted device to your child’s bathroom tap, or have a thermostatic mixing valve fitted inside the shower wall.
  3. Use a bath thermometer every time

    Float a thermometer in the tub and confirm the water reads 90–100°F (32–38°C) before your child gets in.
  4. Turn hot water off before the child enters

    Keep the hot supply closed until you are present and in control of the tap.
  5. Inspect anti-scald devices annually

    Check cartridges for wear, especially in hard water areas, and replace on the manufacturer’s recommended schedule.

Testing Bath Water Temperature

Even with a properly set water heater and anti-scald devices in place, I use a bath thermometer every time. It takes five seconds and removes a variable entirely.

Aim for 90–100°F (32–38°C) for young children. That range feels warm and comfortable without approaching the threshold where skin damage begins. Do not rely on your elbow or wrist to judge. Adult skin is less sensitive than infant skin, and the margin for error is too small to trust a subjective read.

Bath thermometers designed for infants are inexpensive, often under ten dollars, and many float in the tub. Some also display a color indicator when the water is in the safe range. I have tested several and the floating style is the most practical because it stays in the water while you are adjusting the taps.

Building a Bathroom Routine That Reduces Risk

My older daughter was about 22 months old when I realized she had figured out the bathroom faucet. She was not trying to hurt herself. She just liked the water. But the water in our house at the time was set to 130°F (54°C), a fact I had not thought about until that moment.

That incident pushed me to adjust our routine. Now the rule is: hot water off before the child enters the bathroom. Not turned down. Off. The cold water can run, but the hot supply is closed until I am standing there and in control of the temperature.

Lever handles are easier for young children to operate than knobs, which is good for accessibility and increases the risk of unsupervised access to hot water. If your bathroom has lever handles, assume your toddler can turn them. Plan accordingly.

Never leave a child unattended near running water or an active faucet. Incidents happen during brief distractions, a doorbell, a phone, a sibling calling from another room. The goal is to build an environment where a 30-second distraction cannot become a serious injury.

Older Children and Independent Bathroom Use

As children get older and start using the bathroom independently, the risk profile shifts. A four-year-old washing hands unsupervised can turn the hot tap all the way up without understanding why that is dangerous. A six-year-old filling a basin for a toy might do the same.

Teaching water safety is part of this. Explain, at an age-appropriate level, that hot water from the tap can hurt. Show them what the cold and warm settings feel like. But teaching is not a substitute for a properly set water heater and anti-scald protection. Children test limits. They get distracted. They forget. The physical safeguards exist precisely for those moments.

Maintenance: Anti-Scald Devices Are Not Set-and-Forget

Anti-scald devices require periodic maintenance. Cartridges wear out. Valves can become inconsistent over time. If you notice that your shower or tap water temperature has become unpredictable, or if the anti-scald device stops responding to temperature changes the way it used to, that is a signal to check the cartridge or call a plumber.

Review manufacturer guidelines annually. Most manufacturers recommend cartridge replacement every few years depending on water quality and usage. Hard water accelerates wear. If you are in a hard water area, check more frequently.

Beyond the Bathroom

The bathroom is where most scalding injuries happen, but it is not the only place hot water reaches children. Kitchen faucets are often set to the same water heater temperature and used at close range. Humidifiers and steam from cooking present different but related risks.

The same principle applies everywhere: know the temperature, reduce it where you can, and create physical barriers where you cannot. A consistent approach across the whole home is more reliable than a room-by-room patchwork.

If a Scald Burn Occurs

If a scalding burn does happen, the immediate response matters. Run cool, not cold, water over the affected area for 10–20 minutes. Do not apply ice directly to the skin. Remove any wet clothing while cooling the burn, because wet fabric traps heat against the skin and extends the injury. Seek medical attention, even for burns that look minor. Burns in children can be deeper than they appear on the surface.
